DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY
Pharmaceutical chemistry is a branch of pharmacy which deals with study of medicinal agents from a viewpoint of their chemistry. It mainly involves study of mechanism of drug action, fate of drug, its efficacy, toxicity and its correlation with the chemical structure, synthesis, isolation, purification, identification and analysis of pharmaceutical ingredients. Students enrolled for undergraduate pharmacy program are trained in various theory and practical courses of pure as well as applied chemistry to gain enough knowledge and develop interest in the field of drug design and development. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry also conducts Master of Pharmacy course leading to specialisation in Pharmaceutical chemistry. Students enrolled for this program are trained for the advances in field of pharmaceutical chemistry and to carry out research projects involving computer aided or analogue based drug design.
The Department of Pharmaceutical chemistry has 07 faculty members. The department has spacious and well-equipped under graduate laboratories, one central instrument room and one post graduate laboratory. The instrument centre is equipped with sophisticated instruments like, quaternary HPLC system, UV visible spectrophotometers, FTIR spectrophotometer, Photo fluorimeter, flame photometers, colorimeters, etc. Post graduate laboratory has Rotary Vacuum Evaporator, microwave synthesiser, melting point apparatus etc. Thrust areas of Research in the department include drug designing in the field of anti-tuberculosis, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory drugs.
Faculty members of the department have an enthusiastic teaching learning interaction with students enrolled for the UG as well as PG program of the department and encourage students to participate in various chemistry based competition, poster presentations, publication of review and research based findings from the UG and PG projects in the reputed journals.
The quaternary system offers gradients of up to 4 different solvents and pressure range up to 600 bar. Sophisticated pump control to deliver very low chromatographic noise and very low acoustic noise. It has a thermostated column compartment with a pressure range up to 600 bar and variable wavelength detector.
The JASCO V 630 spctrophotometer has a compact design with excellent spectroscopic performance. It is suitable for routine, QC and research applications and has user friendly features. Graphical user interfaces based on Spectra Manager TM II software, the latest version of JASCO's innovative, cross-platform spectroscopy software which allows full system control and advanced data processing.
The IR Affinity-1 is a compact Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer. The interferometer is continuously optimized by a dynamic alignment mechanism, and a built-in auto dryer helps ensure ease of maintenance. The IRAffinity-1 offers the highest S/N ratio in its class (30,000:1, 1-minute accumulation, neighborhood of 2,100 cm-1, peak-to-peak), a maximum resolution of 0.5 cm-1, and compact dimensions. Furthermore, the high-performance IRsolution software, which emphasizes operability, and analysis support programs (Contaminant analysis program and Pharma Report program) make it easier to perform data processing and analysis.
Used in chemical laboratories for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation. Solvents with higher boiling points such as water, dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide can also be evaporated of sufficiently low pressure. Liquid solvents can be removed without excessive heating of what are often complex and sensitive solvent-solute combinations. Rotary evaporators are also used in molecular cooking for the preparation of distillates and extracts.
CATA 2R microwave synthesiser is an alternative for conventional lab scale synthesis providing greener alternatives. It has compact design with power control, timer settings and temperature display.
