DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACEUTICS

Pharmaceutics is the discipline of pharmacy also called the science of dosage form design. There are many chemicals with pharmacological properties, but need special measures to help them achieve therapeutically relevant amounts at their sites of action. Pharmaceutics helps relate the formulation of drugs to their delivery and disposition in the body.

The Department of Pharmaceutics has 06 faculty members. The department has four well-equipped Under- Graduate laboratories and one Post- Graduate laboratory. The Post- Graduate laboratory is equipped with sophisticated instruments like, High Pressure Homogeniser, High Speed Homogeniser, Cooling Centrifuge, Probe Sonicator, Bath Sonicator, Spray Dryer, Particle size and Zeta Potential analyser, Rotary Vacuum Evaporator etc.

All laboratories have qualified laboratory staff who maintain the laboratories and provide smooth conduct of Under graduate & Post- Graduate practical’s. At Under graduate level students practice the art of formulating dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, creams, gels, ointments, solutions, sprays, eye and ear drops, injectables and many others.

We have mentored Graduate & Post –graduate students, who have gone on to successful careers in industry, government, and academia. We are committed to helping each student meet his or her career objectives in the pharmaceutical sciences.

Formulation & Development:

The academic year 2010-11 brought in the first batch of 10 Post-graduate students. Department’s research activities are centred around formulation science as well as New Drug Delivery Systems. The students work on diverse subjects like; Brain drug delivery, Transdermal drug delivery, colonic drug delivery, Multiparticulates (microspheres, microsponges, liposome, Nanoparticles etc.) and specialized emulsions like microemulsion. An outcome of these research activities is the number of publications and presentations the students and staff of the department have to their credit.

The Post-Graduate Pharmaceutics Laboratory is well-equipped to support several small scale industries in terms of usage of instruments and equipments for their research and developmental work. Our objective is to carry out meaningful research. We are look forward to fruitful interaction with the Pharmaceutical industry and other research institutes.

High Pressure Homogeniser

Particle Size Analyser

The SZ-100 nanopartica series instruments are flexible analytical tools for characterizing the physical properties of small particles. Depending on the configuration and application the system can be used as a particle size analyzer, or also used to measure zeta potential, molecular weight, (MW) and second virial coefficient (A2). Typical applications for the SZ-100 include nanoparticles, colloids, emulsions, and submicron suspensions.

Spray Dryer

Lab spray dryer produces dried uniform powder in only few minutes. the majority of true colloidal solutions, emulsions,dispersion and solutions are suitable for spray drying. In many pharma applications, an amorphous product is preferable to crystalline product due to better solubility. The lab spray dryer achieves this conversion in a single step. Features include PLC based control system, HMI user interface, PC based software for control and data acquisition, Spray dry with aqueous as well as solvent based solutions, Designed with a SS-316 material & reinforced with flameproof motors, to withstand the effect of acid & solvent spray drying. Rotary Vacuum Evaporator

Used in chemical laboratories for the efficient and gentle removal of solvents from samples by evaporation. Solvents with higher boiling points such as water, dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide can also be evaporated of sufficiently low pressure. Liquid solvents can be removed without excessive heating of what are often complex and sensitive solvent-solute combinations. Rotary evaporators are also used in molecular cooking for the preparation of distillates and extracts.
